Huawei completes Schubert's 8th Symphony

Back to news overview Huawei 1

For almost 200 years Schubert's 8th symphony has been known as his unfinished work because the piece was never completed. Until now... Huawei combined the power of AI with human expertise to complete the ‘unfinished symphony’.

With a substantial delegation of, among others, Dutch press and other influencers, we travelled to London. There, in the Cadogan Hall, the completed piece was brought to life by the English Session Orchestra. Huawei worked on the composition with composer and Emmy winner Lucas Cantor.

Artificial intelligence...

With this project Huawei wants to show what artificial intelligence (AI) is capable of, using the dual NPU (Neural Processing Unit) of the HUAWEI Mate20 Pro smartphone. By analysing the timbre, pitch and meter of the existing first and second movements of the symphony, the AI model generated the melody for the final and missing third and fourth parts.

“At Huawei we are always looking for ways in which technology can make the world a better place. So, we taught our Mate20 Pro smartphone to analyse an unfinished, nearly 200 year old piece of music and finish it in the style of the original composer”, said Walter Ji, President CBG, Huawei Western Europe. “We used the power of AI to extend the boundaries of what is humanly possible and see the positive role technology can have on modern culture. If our smartphone is intelligent enough to do this, what else is possible?”

...and the human brain

Lucas Cantor: “My role was to draw out the good ideas of AI and fill in the possible gaps to ensure the final result was ready to be played by a symphony orchestra. The result of this collaboration with AI proves that technology offers incredible possibilities and the significant and positive impact it can have on modern culture.”

Esther ter Braak - Brand Manager
Foodora

“For a startup brand like ours, it was extremely important to see frequent media coverage. Het PR Bureau has laid the foundation for our growth from Amsterdam to 6 other cities in the Netherlands. Despite our relatively modest budgets, we were able to achieve enormous coverage together. I look back on a number of activations with great pleasure.”

Vincent Hosman - Country Manager Nederland
Netflix

"Netflix was looking for the best suitable communication partner in every country. This could also be a 'local hero', as long as they are big enough. For the introduction of Netflix in the Netherlands and Belgium, we have partnered up with Het PR Bureau. The desired Service Level Agreement was new to Het PR Bureau, but they adapted very quickly and it soon surfaced. Within the international framework, they surprised us with their proactivity and creative ideas."

Joris Evers - Vice President Netflix, Head of Communications Europe, Middle East & Africa
Specsavers

”The uniqueness of Het PR Bureau is that the people are able to both think on a strategic level and at the same time roll up their sleeves to set up an event or activation. A high-quality one-stop-shop in the field of PR, that is what we were looking for and what we ultimately found in Het PR Bureau.”

Wieteke van Hunnik - PR & Communications manager
Spotify

Alison Bonny - Communicatie Directeur EMEA, Spotify
Zilveren Kruis

“Het PR Bureau is a smart, professional group of people with nice perspectives where I felt at home immediately. Especially in a very difficult market such as the insurance industry, in which many interests play a role and which has many limitations, they did very well. I regard Het PR Bureau as a premium agency. With such a partner you can be assured that your campaign will be executed impeccably.”
